Getting close to new tire time for the Envoy and I'm wondering what you all think of these. I have a set of Cooper Discoverer CTS on there now and they've been fine, but I'd like to see what else is out there.

The CTS have handled Iowa snow without any trouble so I don't think I can justify taking the treadwear hit associated with stepping up to something like a Discoverer AT3 or General Grabber AT2.

What do you guys think?

generally you get what you pay for when you buy generals.. and it's not a whole lot. Generals suck!

I had the AT2s on my previous Jeep, they were great in the snow. Got 50k miles out of them, but they got cupped pretty badly and noisy at the end. Switched to Firestone Destination LE2, and those were even better. Still went great in light snow, but wayyyyy better on dry and wet roads. Never had the chance to try 'em in deep snow though.

Never had General tires, but as itschrome said you do get exactly what you pay for usually.

Not the HTS, but I had a set of General Altimax HPs on a car and I loved them. They wore well, they were quiet, and for a 225 they weren't stingy with the rubber. I don't think General is a bad tire at all...I'd take a General or a Cooper over a Falken any day.

Had similar Coopers H/T's on my old Mazda PU - They were a good bang-for-the-buck tire, if i remember correctly. Wore like iron, especially on a light PU like that -

Picked up a set of the Grabber HTS for my Frontier - they were a pretty good tire but wore quickly (<50k, and they were on their wear bars). Seemed BS, as they had a longer rated life, and I figured that the low rolling-resistance compounds should be a bit harder.

I swapped them for a set of Firestone Destination LE's, which I've run for about a year- great wet traction, very little wear, reasonable road noise for the tire type. I'd pick the Firestones well over the Grabbers.

I have Grabber AT2s on my Grand Cherokee. Because I like overkill and only put about 5k miles a year on it anyway.

For a highway (rather than all-terrain) tire that's supposed to be reasonably cheap and also good in snow, check out the Firestone Destination LE 2.

Somehow I don't think those would be great DD tires...

That's possible, but they would be totally badass.

I have a set on the Ranger, and they're not bad. Not great but not bad. Decent grip in the snow, quiet on the highway. If you end up with the XL version, they will ride rough. I ended up airing mine down to get some ride quality back.

Just put a set of these on dad's f350. Haven't heard any complaints, but he probably won't complain since I got him a set heavy duty truck tires for $400.
